The Places I’ve Tasted: Part II

A Memoir on the Foods I’ve Tried

By Abigail Strauss

Hello, welcome back to my world of flavors!
Filled with things so delicious, you can’t help but savor.
I heard that you missed me—so why wait? Here we go!
Which country is first? Switzerland, say hello!

The Swiss like cold plunges and skiing on ridges,
And watching the swans that swim under bridges.
Fondue is so tasty, with potatoes or bread.
Not picky? Try pickles or onions instead.

Now here comes the winner—the best! What a star!
It’s Greece, with the tastiest foods by far.
I can’t pick just one; they’re all too delicious,
And look so divine—maybe more than Narcissus.

Next up, we have Thailand—so hot, yet lovely,
With so many people and places to see.
Khanom Buaeng is a sweet treat they make,
With marshmallow filling and a crispy pancake.

And now we have Bali—what a beautiful place!
With traditions and animals, it brings a smile to your face.
Mangosteen is a fruit with odd texture, but tastes grand:
Tangy and tart, yet sweet and juicy—it never tastes bland.

Last but not least, Australia—the land down under.
With kangaroos and koalas, it fills me with wonder.
Tim Tams are this verse’s topic—chocolate-covered glee!
Caramel, brownie, mint, and more—great with some coffee.

And that is all I have today, but stick around, and then
A new poem will show up... in just a few weeks again!
Bye for now! Au revoir! Ciao! So long!
Until next time—this goodbye won’t be prolonged!

Personal Note:

The foods I have been trying around the world have been amazing. What’s interesting to me is the style some countries have. Some have heartier, more filling meals, and others have food so fresh it seems to have been completely made from scratch (which is true in most cases). The country with the best food, in my opinion, is Greece. Every single dish I had there was better than the last. But that doesn’t mean the other foods I’ve had aren’t good. In fact, this year has been filled with the best meals I’ve ever had. In a couple of weeks, you’ll get the third poem in this series. Until then, try new things. You might discover something amazing.
