Post-Apocalyptic Playground
(P.A.P.)
By Evan Strauss
All the playgrounds I have been on in Berlin, Germany, have an element of danger.
But the best playground I have ever been on is the Post-Apocalyptic Playground (that’s what I call it). It's actually called Abenteuerlicher Bauspielplatz Kolle 37. It is a playground where kids can be kids—with no parents allowed.
When we first entered, we walked by a shed where one of the helpers was giving a four-year-old an axe. There were skybridges everywhere, all built by kids. There were so many nails because every visitor gets a can of nails to use, and because it was exposed to the elements, every nail was rusty.
In the back, there is a car crash—but all the metal and fabric have been ripped off, leaving just the frame. In the front area, there was a Trojan horse made out of metal, wood, and half of a tire as a mane. In the very back was a massive pile of scrap wood and metal that anyone can use. If you want any tool, you just ask the helper and they will have it.
There is a massive pile of broken bikes, wheelbarrows, and even a unicycle. Also in the pile are knick-knacks such as crutches, flippers, balls, carts, and more. There is also a mini skate park that kids can use and play on.
In the end, we didn’t build anything, but we had so much fun exploring and playing. Isaac even found a giant heavy plastic ball, flippers, and crutches, put them on, and rolled the ball all around the playground.
The entire place is a playground where kids can test their limits, learn how to use tools, and just build whatever they want.
Personal Note:
The Abenteuerlicher Bauspielplatz Kolle 37 is so fun and I want to go back. I am really enjoying Berlin and all it has to offer.
